Beaufort Cobia Fishing

Next lets turn our attention to cobia. These fish should start to show up in the spring and stay around through early summer and for what ever reason they do like to pop up to the surface and swim around like they own the place…well I guess they do. Once again this gives us a great opportunity to sight fish. As with most sight fishing, looking for cobia involves hours of boredom followed by moments of adrenaline rushing panic! The biggest difference in sight fishing for cobia from other fish is that we need use heavier tackle. For spinning rods I use Ugly Stick Custom 12-20 pound rods with Penn 6500 reels and for fly fishing I use 10-12 weight St. Croix Legend Elite rods with Sage 6000 reels. The heavier rods are needed to present larger baits but also to handle a powerful cobia and the biggest thing about the reels is to ensure that the drags are silky smooth.

Beaufort Cobia Fishing Report

Sunday, May 27th, 2012

With summer upon us the temperatures are heating up and so is the fishing. I have been doing a little bit of fishing on the inshore waters for trout, redfish and flounder. Overall, the inshore bite has been fair to good. I say fair because the bite has been somewhat inconsistent. I have had the best success using live minnows under a popping cork around the grass edges, creek mouths and oyster points. Switching gears I have been spending some time on the offshore waters fishing some of the local wrecks and live bottom areas and the bite has been on fire! We have been live bait fishing and drift fishing to catch some really nice cobia. Mixed in we have been catching good numbers of bull redfish, black sea bass, porgies, snapper, grouper and sheepshead. The only thing that has been knocking us out has been the wind… not to mention two named tropical storms in one week and we are still in May. Until next time, Catch em Up!

Beaufort, SC Cobia Fishing

We are in the middle of another cobia season here in the Beaufort and Hilton Head area. You can always tell when you go over the Broad River bridge and see 40 boats sitting on the rip. As it has been for the past two seasons the inshore cobia fishing is rather slow to say the least…I wonder if it has to do with everyone killing as many fish as they can while these fish come into the Port Royal Sound to spawn? For the past five years I have had a two fish per boat limit (rather than the state two per person) and now try to keep only the smaller males if possible. That aside, I have done some sight fishing in the river and found a few nice fish cruising over the past few weeks, but have done better over the offshore bottom areas. Offshore we have also been catching catching red snapper, sea bass, sharks among others.
